Philip and Peter “Montgomery” went into my roulette hall of fame towards the back end of 2004 when they surpassed the £250,000 mark by beating roulette. So what you may say, that is nothing compared to the amounts of money that other roulette players have won down the years. Well that is true and I cannot argue but this is 2006 and not 1906. The gaming industry is far more clued up now and getting something over on them is quite a substantial task these days.
There is a world of difference between taking advantage of a dealer mistake and clobbering the casino for a few quid and doing it as a living on a consistent basis. As you will have guessed, “Montgomery” is not their real name as it would be unfair to use it as they are still active. They are also not brothers although they spend so much time together that they may as well be.
So what method did they use to extract this money? Well they didn’t discover biased wheels and they certainly were not skilled enough to read the wheel. But they took around £25,000 per year each between 1999 and 2004 using a combination of past posting and stealing chips from other punters on roulette . There probably isn’t a croupier alive who is not aware of past posting or its cousin “Top Hatting”. But even the more experienced inspectors, pit bosses and managers are easy meat for the very best roulette mechanics.
The worst top hatters and past posters are very bad and I have caught many down the years. But yet I am not naïve enough to think that many far more skilled individuals have managed to get through my defences. When it comes to stealing chips from other punters then dealers and inspectors do not tend to look out for that. So long as they are not stealing from the casino then the other punters are fair game and should be looking after their own chips.
So the punters are basically defenceless and the CCTV is not going to save them either. Simply because they will not even be aware that they have been robbed. Target selection is the number one criteria for a roulette mechanic and he knows full well that when he takes the money that it will definitely not be missed. But they do it in small increments which is really the way to go with this thing. It is basically a £5 chip here or a couple of singles there and if they are lucky….a pony (£25 chip).
These may not seem big amounts of money and they are not but you only need to get £100 per night five nights a week for a year to gross a tax free £25,000. It is because the amounts are small that they get away with it. These guys are artists when it comes to past posting because they are masters of psychology and time misdirection. Casino personnel are on the lookout for past posters using rather high denomination chips and obvious decoying tactics and this makes them fair game because it is exactly the opposite of what the best mechanics do. Look out for part two of this series coming soon.
