The skills related to playing poker revolve around making an effective bet based on the hand you hold. Poker does involve a certain degree of luck since a good hand will increase your odds of winning. To assume that the hand means everything, however, would be a very poor way of looking at the game. Consider the fact that if you have a great hand and you instantly begin betting high; this will tip off the other players that you may have a great hand and as such cause them to fold early preventing you from fully taking advantage of your hand.

Tips for Betting with a Good Hand

When you have a great hand you may feel excited. It is perfectly normal to be excited over the fact you have a good hand, however, you can’t show this fact. You don’t want other players to instantly realize you have a great hand. Your first bet should consider this fact accordingly. You should play conservatively so the opposing players are lead to believe you only have an average hand.  This will encourage them to be a little less conservative on their bets and may also encourage them to bluff if they in fact have a terrible hand. The end goal should be to cause them to bet as much money as possible. This will lead to you winning a greater amount with your hand.

Tips for Betting with a Bad Hand

Sometimes you won’t get the best hand when playing poker. Some players will simply fold on these hands. This tactic can be used occasionally to lead players into believing you’re the type to fold when you have a bad hand but it must be used conservatively. Another popular tactic is to bet a little high with the goal of leading the opposing players into believing you have a good hand. This tactic is known as bluffing. A combination of both tactics can actually work quite well. If you are to fold on a few bad hands this will lead players into a suspecting you are not a skilled player. This, in turn, can open you up to effectively use bluffing later on in the game. The only problem with this tactic is it will usually lead to players folding early when you do bluff a hand.

General Thoughts on Poker

Remember that poker is more a game of skill than a game of luck. When playing poker, the bets you make can actually be used to encourage opposing players to bet higher when you’re playing with a great hand, or even fold when you’re playing with a lousy hand.  It becomes important to play with varying techniques so other players cannot easily predict your intentions. You must also constantly watch the opposing players looking for patterns which will give their personal style of play away.
