Andy Roddick has removed himself from the list of players at this week’s warm-up Madrid Masters event for the French Open due to a stomach illness. He had a bye to enter the second round and he made the announcement of his decision to withdraw just before he was scheduled for his second round match on Wednesday against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez.
27-year-old Roddick simply claimed that he was too weak to enter into the match from vomiting for the previous couple of days since his arrival in Madrid and was unable to fully focus. Oscar Hernandez, also from Spain, who missed the main tournament qualifying, replaced him in the second round match against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez.
Earlier in the season, Roddick successfully claimed two titles in Miami and Brisbane and received an eighth rank in the ATP World Tour. He has not yet been able to play on European clay this year, but his success does not necessarily lie on clay surfaces. Roddick finds more success when he is able to participate on faster surfaces.
Fifth-seeded Roddick was last year’s runner-up at Wimbledon to Roger Federer, who is also the former champion in Madrid.
Andy Roddick has also never been able to make it further than the fourth round while in Paris and this year’s French Open event starts on May 23 in Paris. He plans to participate in the event even though he did have to pull out of this week’s Madrid Masters. He completely understands that this isn’t anywhere near the type of preparation that he should be undergoing to be ready for the French Open later this month.
