The 20/1 pre-tournament tip Shaun Murphy won the Maplin UK Championship in Telford and so then Snooker expert Gareth Friel made headway to jackpot.
The Snooker expert preferred the form to be temporary and the class to be permanent rather than the longer format and good thing Shaun Murphy managed to claim a great 10-9 victory, beating Marco Fu.
Snooker Gareth Friel: “Having dismissed many of his rivals who are out of form, it may seem like a contradiction to back Shaun Murphy given his pretty horrendous season so far.
But we can’t help but feel 20/1 is too long for a former world champion and one of the most consistent performers on the tour for most of the last 18 months.”
He added: “Murphy has not made it past the last 32 of an event this season, suffering at the hands of Mark Williams, Andy Hicks, Adrian Gunnell and Mike Dunn last time out in Bahrain. But the best of 17 format should be perfect for him to find some form and he couldn’t really have asked for a better first round opponent in part-time casino croupier Martin Gould. Murphy made the last four here last season, going down 9-5 to Stephen Maguire, and certainly has the ability to at least repeat the feat this time. You get the feeling he will be a major threat as soon as he gets that first win and at 20s we have to have a small each-way flutter.”
