The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series makes their way to Indianapolis on Sunday, July 21, 2011, for the infamous Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Who will be getting down on their knees with their entire pit crew including crew chief to kiss the bricks?
Second in points only behind Carl Edwards by seven points, Jimmie Johnson is favored to win this event. Johnson has secured a single win this year in addition to seven top five finishes. He has won the Brickyard 400 three times – once from the pole – although his average finish at the track is only 18.3. He has four top 10 finishes and three top five finishes here at Indy. JJ ranks fourth amongst the active drivers in the series with a 100.1 driver rating.
Carl Edwards, the season points leader, has secured one win also this year in addition to 10 top five finishes. He has never gotten a win here at Indy though his average finish is 10.5 and he has finished in the top five once at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Kyle Busch is among the drivers that have a good chance to win this year at Indy with three wins on the year and 10 top five finishes as well. However, he also has multiple DNF’s – three to be exact. In addition, he has never won here but does have a 13.7 average finish with one top five and four top 10 finishes. His driver rating is 94.0, which ranks eighth amongst active drivers.
Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon are Indiana natives and are both pretty high up there to win the Brickyard 400 this year. Apart from Jimmie Johnson, Stewart and Gordon are the only other drivers that have won at Indy multiple times.
Leading the drivers in wins, top 10s and laps led, Gordon has four wins as well as three poles in addition to nine top five finishes and 13 finishes in the top 10. His average finish is 9.5 with a driver rating that ranks 10th amongst active drivers at 93.3.
has secured one pole and has won at his home track twice. He also has finished in the top five six times and eight times within the top 10. He has the absolute best driver rating amongst current drivers in the series at 109.3 and his average finish at Indy is 8.3.
Running decent as of late with an average 7.5 finish in the previous four races, Greg Biffle has finished in the top 10 four times and the top five twice here so no wins for the Bif. His average finish here is 13.9 and he holds the fifth best driver rating of all drivers here with 97.7.
A look at some of the rest of the field:
Juan Pablo Montoya has secured one pole, no wins, a single top five finish and a single top 10 finish. His average finish at this track is 21.0 and he ranks second with his 106.4 driver rating.
Clint Bowyer has finished in the top five nad the top 10 twice each while recording an average finish of 11.6 and a driver rating that ranks 13th amongst active drivers at 89.6.
Jeff Burton has secured a single pole but has been unable to find Victory Lane and kiss the bricks. He has finished in the top five just once and five times in the top 10. His average finish at Indy is 17.5 and he ranks seventh in driver rating at 95.0. Burton will head into this weekend’s race with a new crew chief.
Kevin Harvick has secured one pole and has won once. He has four top fives and has finished in the top 10 seven times. His average finish at the track is 9.9 while he ranks sixth amongst the drivers in driver rating with a 95.1.
Kasey Kahne has yet to get a pole or a win at Indy but has completed a top five finish twice and a top 10 finish four different times. He has an average finish at Indy of 15.6 and a 90.8 driver rating that ranks him 12th amongst current drivers in the series.
Matt Kenseth has secured four top five finishes and six top 10 finishes. His average finish at the track is 15.1 and he ranks 11th in the series with a 92.7 driver rating.
Mark Martin has secured one pole but has yet to win here in his career. He has finished in the top five six times and the top 10 ten times. His average Indy finish is 13.2 and he ranks third with a 105.3 driver rating.
