The fourth Grand Slam, the US Open, will get underway shortly in New York. Often the most challenging of the Grand Slam events, the 2010 US Open is truly “open.” Wear and tear from a full season of tournaments can take its toll, leading to the rise of hitherto unknown players. But will that happen in New York in 2010?
Caroline Wozniacki doesn’t think so. She’s had a fantastic summer, culminating with a win at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. The first woman since 2003 to be seeded number one at the US Open never having won a major tournament, she is determined to win her first in New York in 2010.
As someone who has won a prior US Open just last year, second seeded Kim Clijsters knows how it’s done and is looking for a repeat performance. With number one ranked Serena Williams out with a foot injury, her toughest competition may have been sidelined before the event even began. She has also boasted an impressive summer, with her last tournament victory coming on August 15 in the Western Southern Financial Group Women’s Open. She’s 21-3 on hard courts, which should bode well for her in New York.
Coming off a sprained knee, Venus Williams is seeded number three in this year’s US Open. Though not quite as spry as her younger sister, she still has the stamina needed to hang with the best of the bunch, but does she have the offensive firepower to put herself over the top?
With the absence of Serena, the women’s field is generally believed to be wide open. Venus Williams bears watching. It should be easy to tell right away if she is 100% after her injury. If so, she’s capable of taking the whole thing. But Caroline Wozniacki is younger, in better shape and hungry for her first major win. Kim Clijsters has been here before, though, and is also in top form. This doesn’t even take into account someone like Maria Sharapova, who is looking to make a statement after being sidelined for months due to shoulder surgery. In the end, it might come down to whoever can take care of her early round opponents, and Wozniacki seems to be ideally positioned to do just that.
