Guest Blog: David De Gea still confident – and rightly so!

I remember the first thing Sir Alex Ferguson said about David De Gea at his arrival to the pre-season tour:

- He will need time to adapt.

It shouldn’t be any difference in buying a young goal keeper than buying a young player at any other position. If Manchester United would have brought in a young midfielder from Spain people wouldn’t put this kind of pressure on him. The difference in De Gea’s case is of course that he steps in as the first choice keeper. The perfect scenario would have been to keep Edwin van der Sar for another year and use him in goal when needed and otherwise as a mentor for De Gea.

The fact that Ferguson keeps pointing out that De Gea needs time is not that he expects the crowd to put less pressure on him. It just means that Ferguson himself will give De Gea time. It feels like De Gea is aware of this as well and I think Ferguson’s support is vital for this kid’s confidence.

“When you do things wrong, even though it’s a just couple of mistakes, the press has every right to criticise you. What happened is something normal and no big deal. Now it’s in my hands to change those early negative criticisms into praise. I’m surrounded by very good people and that means that we can do big things this year. The club, the supporters, the facilities, the atmosphere, it’s all out of this world. From the first day I’ve felt like just one more within the group. They help me with everything and that’s pleasing”, De Gea said.

What I think De Gea needs to work on the most in his game is crosses/corners etc. This is very different from the Spanish game. The mistakes he made against City and WBA surprised me because it looked like they came from a lack of concentration, perhaps because he was nervous?

I bet De Gea will get better for every game. What do you think?
