Most sportsbooks now offer their users the ability to bet the Total on a college basketball game. This is a bet on whether the two teams’ scores added together will be above or below a given number, which is picked by the bookmaker for each game. Many professional sports bettors prefer to bet the Total rather than the point spread for a given contest.
College basketball totals generally hover in the 130-160 range, with lower-scoring games dipping into the 120s and higher scoring ones topping out around 175. . As with most other total bets, college basketball total bets require the bettor to risk $11 to win $10. The total line can move up or down by four or five points between the time it is released and game time. Nationally televised games will see the greatest line movement based on the number of bets made for each outcome.
Before betting the total, it is a good idea to get a feel for the two teams involved in the game. Does one of them have a stifling zone defense, which limits their opponents’ field goal percentage? Do they typically play teams that run the length of the court, or does their conference contain mostly teams that play at a slower pace and utilize the press while playing a lot of zone defense? Have they been streaky all year, never consistently scoring within a certain range? Do they have all their best shooters available for the game?
If a team is particularly reliant on the three-point shot to win, that makes it difficult for bettors to form a good over/under bet. After all, if they have an off night, their total could be very low, but if they are firing on all cylinders, they are likely to exceed the total. If each team likes to shoot the three, you are probably safer finding another game on which to place your wager.
Keep your eye on the total as it moves around during the day leading up to the game. Any major shifts may indicate some news that you will need to take into account before you make your bet, especially if the game on which you are betting is not nationally televised. It is also always a good idea to visit the various sportsbooks to see who has the best line for the total. Although total betting on college basketball is relatively new, it is becoming more competitive and different books will try to outdo each other for the best line.
