Baseball Betting: Playing the Odds in the Dog Days of Summer
Published on Friday, August 6, 2010 by Betting And Games

As the heat of August sets in, we approach the most difficult portion of the baseball season for both players and those who bet on their performance. Will he tire out? Is that old injury going to act up again? Do they have what it takes to finish the season on their current pace?

These are some of the questions that constantly go through your head if you’re trying to bet on a ballgame at this point in the season. Here are some tips to help you avoid betting on a team that’s fading out of contention:

•    Study the Lineup: Now more than ever, it’s crucial to study the lineup each night and for the preceding several games. Managers like to change up the lineups at this point in the season to try to give their stars a break. There’s a chance that a team’s best bat won’t be playing on a given night, so pay close attention to the statements from the clubhouse and scrutinize the lineup before game time.

•    Stuck in a Rut: Pitchers tend to get tired as August rolls on. Many of them pick up a second wind in mid-September, but don’t be surprised if some starters and relievers have bad outings in the period from mid August to mid September.

•    Back-Breaking Schedules: You also need to pay close attention to the schedule. It’s not uncommon for a team to play 15, 16 or even 17 games in a row with no days off in between. This is bound to wear on a team, which could cause them to play poorly against a weak opponent.

With the playoffs two months away, the lines are being drawn as to who will be a contender and who will fall behind. Keep those tips in mind, and you’ll hopefully be betting on a winner.
