Betting Methods in Texas Hold’em

  • Betting in Texas Hold’em takes a lot of skill and nerves of steel. This is because there are so many different ways to bet. Players of no limit Texas Hold’em have to know these different ways to bet because they can gain or lose all their chips in one hand.

One popular way to bet is known as blind stealing. Blind stealing is a very popular way to bet among good players because they can gain extra money to pay for their bets by stealing the blinds. This technique is noticeably done from late position (which is the last 3 players to act in a full game) because it because of the leverage they have if no one else has risen. Usually a player will try to steal the blinds by raising when no other players have risen. The goal is to force the blinds to fold by placing a decent sized bet.

A similar betting technique is called the steal raise. The steal raise is also done in late position usually if you’re the last person to act. You place a bet trying to limit the number of players in the hand or possibly steal the blinds. This is usually done with draws or the top pair as you will be more likely to win with top pair against fewer opponents.

By far the most common and popular method of betting is the check raise. Check raising is simply where the player will check and then raise after another player bets. You can catch on to someone who only check raises rather quickly, however in the right hands the check raise can be the most deadly type of raise in Texas Hold’em. There are many reasons that a player would check raise rather than use a different style of betting.

The check raise first allows for a player with a good hand to either steal all of the other bets or to extort more money from other players. A player who check raises a lot only with good hands will often try to use this to his advantage once in a while by bluffing and making a check raise bet. Since that specific player is known for only check raising with good hands players may willingly throw their hands and money away rather than challenge him.

Another type of bet is called the opening bet or betting for information. This is done from any position and is usually done by players holding a top pair or a player bluffing. The player will try to use this technique to limit the number of players or get information from them while watching them respond to the bet.  This type of bet is only recommended when you believe you have a fair shot at the pot and know you can limit the number of players.

The last type of betting in Texas Hold’em is the squeezing technique. This technique is used when you have the best hand and you believe that your opponents are on a draw. You’re trying to make them make a mistake by forcing them to call when they have incorrect pot odds to do so.
