What is Blackjack?

An ace card can be worth one point or eleven points. This point value is determined on the cards which the player already holds.

Getting to twenty one is a great way to ensure that you will win the hand; however, this should not be your goal when playing blackjack. Your main goal should be to receive a higher score than the dealer. When choosing whether to hit or stay, it is important to consider what cards you currently have in your hand. If you have less than eleven, then you can safely take a hit because no card will put you over twenty one. If you have over eleven, it is best to look at what the dealer has available. The dealer will always have a card down; however, if the visible cards can give you an idea on what he is playing with. The key here is to recognize a few important facts regarding the way the dealer has to play.

The dealer has to play to eighteen, which means he is required to hit until he has eighteen or higher. When the dealer has a low card up, this increases the odds that he could bust. For this reason, it is generally safer to accept a hand under eighteen. When the dealer has a high card up there is a higher chance that he may already have a score over eighteen. At this point, it is worth risking a bust to achieve a score over eighteen, however this should be within reason. It is generally considered unwise to take a hit when you hold over fifteen due to the fact that at this point any card over a six will cause you to bust.

Things to Remember

Blackjack offers a better chance of winning than most games at the casino so if you are going to choose one to bet on, it is a good option. You need to remember that the dealer still holds a marginally better chance of winning the game than the players do. You must also take into account the fact that Blackjack is a game of skill. It takes some practice. Remember, until you get the feel for it keep your bets low or play with your friends.
